Corrosion and Corrosion Management Investigations in Seawater Reverse Osmosis Desalination Plants ArchiMer
Larche, Nicolas; Dezerville, Philippe; Le Flour, Denise.
To comply with the demanding operational conditions of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) process, both in terms of corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, the conventional metallic material selection was often stainless steel for seawater and brines handling units (e.g. pumps, valves and piping). However, many cases of corrosion failures of stainless steel in SWRO desalination units have been reported often attributed to un-adapted stainless steel grade selection and/or to the particular aggressive conditions in “warm” regions where many recent desalination plants are built (high ambient temperature, severe biofouling, etc.). The operational corrosion risk will actually highly depend on the material composition, on the metallurgy (i.e. cast or...

Corrosion Casting, a Known Technique for the Study and Teaching of Vascular and Duct Structure in Anatomy International Journal of Morphology
Rueda Esteban,Roberto Javier; López McCormick,Juan Sebastián; Martínez Prieto,Daniel Ricardo; Hernández Restrepo,Juan David.
Teaching and learning anatomy, as a process, has changed. Fresh cadavers were once used as a tool for the student to approach the human body in order to overcome theoretical knowledge and gain applied expertise. Today, techniques such as corrosion casting are known to be a more effective way of achieving optimal results with the students. This paper examines a method to apply this technique to an organ using different polymers. The concentrations for acrylic, epoxy resin, polyester resin, and room temperature vulcanization (RTV) silicone are described, as well as the corresponding diameter of the duct to be injected with each one. A variety of specimens obtained using this technique, their qualities and characteristics are presented. The results of using...

Corrosion of stainless steel components in seawater reverse osmosis desalination plants-investigations on adapted internal cathodic protection ArchiMer
Larche, Nicolas; Dezerville, Philippe; Le Flour, Denise; Vinzio, Pascal; Kofler, Karl-heinz; Thierry, Dominique.
Stainless steel is widely used in seawater reverse osmosis units (SWRO) for both good mechanical and corrosion resistance properties. However, many corrosion failures of stainless steel in SWRO desalination units have been reported. These failures may often be attributed to un-adapted stainless steel grade selection and/or to the particular aggressive seawater conditions in "warm" regions (high ambient temperature, severe biofouling, etc.). Cathodic protection (CP) is a well-known efficient system to prevent corrosion of metallic materials in seawater. It is successfully used in the oil and gas industry to protect carbon steel structures exposed in open-sea. However, the specific service conditions of SWRO units may seriously affect the efficiency of such...

Improved biological performance of magnesium by micro-arc oxidation BJMBR
Ma,W.H.; Liu,Y.J.; Wang,W.; Zhang,Y.Z..
Magnesium and its alloys have recently been used in the development of lightweight, biodegradable implant materials. However, the corrosion properties of magnesium limit its clinical application. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the degradation behavior and biomechanical properties of magnesium materials treated with micro-arc oxidation (MAO), which is a new promising surface treatment for developing corrosion resistance in magnesium, and to provide a theoretical basis for its further optimization and clinical application. The degradation behavior of MAO-treated magnesium was studied systematically by immersion and electrochemical tests, and its biomechanical performance when exposed to simulated body fluids was evaluated by...

Réaction de réduction de l'oxygène sur les aciers inoxydables en eau de mer naturelle. Influence du biofilm sur les processus de corrosion ArchiMer
Le Bozec, Nathalie.
iofilm development on stainless steels immersed in natural seawater can have prejudicial consequences on the resistance of these materials to corrosion . The goal of the present study was to get more precise information on the corrosion processes, and especially on the oxygen reduction reaction. As the reaction is linked to the stainless steel surface state, the characterisation of the oxides films (composition, structure, thickness...) is essential to understand the mechanisms and the oxygen reduction kinetic. The first aim of the study has been to correlate the oxygen reduction processes with the characteristics of the oxides layer as a function of the alloy surface treatment (mechanical polishing, electrochemical passivation and prereduction, chemical...

Recent advances in the study of biocorrosion: an overview Rev. Microbiol.
Beech,Iwona B.; Gaylarde,Christine C..
Biocorrosion processes at metal surfaces are associated with microorganisms, or the products of their metabolic activities including enzymes, exopolymers, organic and inorganic acids, as well as volatile compounds such as ammonia or hydrogen sulfide. These can affect cathodic and/or anodic reactions, thus altering electrochemistry at the biofilm/metal interface. Various mechanisms of biocorrosion, reflecting the variety of physiological activities carried out by different types of microorganisms, are identified and recent insights into these mechanisms reviewed. Many modern investigations have centered on the microbially-influenced corrosion of ferrous and copper alloys and particular microorganisms of interest have been the sulfate-reducing bacteria and...

The importance of corrosion resistance test of cannulas in the quality control of hypodermic needles BJPS
Feitoza-Silva,Michele; Carvalho,Carolina Mesquita de; Bittencourt,Lívia Bretas; Leandro,Katia Christina; Gemal,André Luis.
According to Anvisa risk rating, hypodermic needles offer medium risk to the user’s health. This study discussed the importance of the corrosion resistance test in tubes of hypodermic needles, in the product quality control. A review of cannulas of hypodermic needles was carried out according to ISO 9626:2003 and 9259:1997 ABNT NBR. For the results evaluation, a scale which classifies the extent of corrosion was adjusted. 174 samples of PNI needles from 17 States and 9 different record holders were analyzed. According to the methodology of ISO 9626:2003, 100% of the samples were considered satisfactory. However, in accordance with the methodology of ISO 9259:1997, 97.1% of the samples were rejected. Irregularities can lead to impairment of product quality,...

Tuyauteries composites: Installation prototype sur un bateau de peche ArchiMer
Croquette, Jean; Dufour, X; Forestier, J; Parquic, J.
A composite prototype engine cooling piping system was installed in 1990 by SBPI on a 50 meter fishing boat owned by Jego Quere. The installation on board was easy and no incident has happened since the beginning of this experiment, which is followed by a working group coordinated by Ifremer and checked by Bureau Veritas. Extended application of composite pipes may be contemplated.
